Google Wave: Natural Language Processing

Casey Whitelaw describes the natural language processing behind Google Wave’s spelling correction on the deck of the Sydney office. Birds and boat horns for effect.

A long awaited update, or new video. This is one of my favorite commentaries of him. I personally typed it off his book “All Things Censored” it was written in the early 90′s so maybe you won’t know the allusions he makes. … American mass media is a marvel of technology. It is whiz-bang, sparkle, glitter, and satellite wizardry. It is a master plan of methods to communicate, and a paupers worth of substance. With such technology, how are people so woefully misinformed? The average American neither knows nor cares about the vast world beyond the nations border. The average American student knows little math, no history, and very little geography, and nor does he or she want to know. Americans have computers in school, dozens of TV stations, and the most aggressive news media on earth. Does that mean theyre better informed? Hardly. On November 2, 1995, the United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly—117 to 3—to condemn the United States for its continuing blockade of Cuba.* The international community called the United States blockade a flagrant act of aggression and a blatant violation of international law. That the UN vote was reported at all in American media is amazing, for such news is more often than not passed over entirely by the American press; but where was information about the blockade itself, the effects suffered by the Cuban people, in-depth comments form the United Nations delegates and leaders around the world? 1. this will be able to create a universal and of easy learn universal language that can make us be able to talk with every nation in the world. I will be able to flert with chinese girls at the internet, sex tourism will increase in CHina lol, thanks Google o/

  2. this is all waste of time .. autocorrect doesnt work anywhere, and making it 5% faster doesnt mean, these people will use 5% time, they will produce 5% more garbage and spam .. hence just dont do this anywhere … you are just wasting your time ..

  3. LETS MATE TOMORROW!

  4. @L0VECHILDD I think it only suggests that you change it, like microsoft Word’s spellcheck. It doesn’t change it automatically.

What would be cooler would be if, instead of statistics, this thing used grammar patterns. eg. “met” is a past participle of “meet”; but the infinitive form “meet” is required following “Let’s”, so based off of that it’d change the word. Then again, this wouldn’t work for general misspellings.

But still, for grammar check, this’d be cool.

  5. @IntelArt you mean meet not meat.

  6. @liguofu MEAT… Did you ever MEAT a girl? MEAT… I meant MEAT the ALL AMERICAN Google girls…

  7. @IntelArt you mean..meat? take them as meat in dinner?

  8. @punchthedog right, but in our community we use it as a verb all the time. I hope they plan on having settings for different dialects.

  9. how do you add spelly?

  10. @Prepentach He is not., because this video is posted on the official Google youtube channel.

  11. If you write, “Let’s meat tomorrow”, then Spelly will smack you in the head.

  12. Meat is not a verb.

  13. so, if i want to meAt with my friend tomorrow (meat = eat some meat), this tool will change my spelling, even though i intended to write meat?

  14. Looks way cooler in Wave than on his outdoor whiteboard.

  15. НУ что скажешь угарно

  16. Watching this work in Wave is really amazing. It’s considerably “smarter” than the spell checker in nearly every other app I’ve used. Much of the time, it just fixes things for you with very few misses.

  17. This more than anything might be the most exciting and impressive thing Google has going right now. This is absolutely amazing!

  18. This is great and all… just let me know when Google is going to wipe my ass.

  19. ask your boss if you can go inside and show us the actual software. Or are you just some homeless guy with a ‘google’ shirt on.

  20. What is the point of the whiteboard?

  21. Should make for some interesting conversation, particularly those into Tok Pisin:-)

  22. Yes you’re right. It doesn’t give you a quick hit of adrenalin… IT’S NOT MEANT TO YOU FOOL!
He’s talking about a spell checker, not the latest EA game.

  28. @mirrorcard Yea I agree as well. Because most kids don’t use the internet for information, they use it to play games, and look at their facebook page.

  29. This was riveting analysis of the America system. I wont say if I agree or dont. But Mumia is clearly an intelligent man. I am very impressed by this brother.

  30. just like the Roman empire with there Colosseums they were not informed about there wars, calling there enemies Barberians less educated, savages. I see a lot of similarities with the American empire but instead of colosseums we have TV instead of calling are enemies barberians we call them terrorists, we are exposed to so much propaganda every day.Americans called Nelson Mandela a terrorists, Che Guevara, Fidel Castro this people fought for the people.

  31. Wow thats something i learned from mumia he’s a well open minded person ashamed that he got a false trial and sentence to death row. Whats wrong with that the good guys always get killed and let the evil run away from it.

  32. FREE MUMIA ABU JAMAL!

  33. Free Mumia Abu Jamal.

  34. Propaganda bs

  35. What’s the rest of the truth? Please share it with us.

  36. I agree about the development of computers to “supposedly” make kids learn faster. That’s not entirely true though.
